![]() ![]() ![]() The temperament of the West Highland White Terrier can vary greatly, with some being friendly towards children whilst others prefer solitude. Cousin to the "Scotty", the Westie was bred to hunt small rodents at places such as farms. They are very energetic and need plenty of exercise. It is also prone to skin disorders, with a breed-specific condition called Hyperplastic Dermatosis occurring. Several breed-specific and non-specific health issues appear in the breed including a condition in young dogs nicknamed "westie jaw" which causes an overgrowth of bone in the jaw of the dog. They are loyal companions who will go to the ends of the Earth to please their masters. The Westie is an active breed, but are social with a high prey drive. The breed can be good with children, but will not always tolerate rough handling. It has a white double coat of fur which fills out the dog's face giving it a rounded appearance. It is a medium-sized terrier, although with longer legs than other Scottish breeds of terrier. It has been featured in television and film including in Hamish Macbeth and in advertising by companies such as Cesar dog food and Scottish whisky Black & White. The breed remains very popular in the UK and is in the top third of all breeds in the USA since the 1960s. The breeds of small white Scottish terriers were given its modern name for the first time in 1908, with recognition by major kennel clubs occurring around the same time. Other related breeds included George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll's Roseneath Terrier and Dr. Edward Donald Malcolm, 16th Laird of Poltalloch, is credited with the creation of the modern breed from his Poltalloch Terrier, but did not want to be known as such. The modern breed is descended from a number of breeding programs of white terriers in Scotland prior to the 20th century. The West Highland was first shown in the USA in 1906 and first recognized by the AKC in 1908.The West Highland White Terrier, commonly known as the Westie or Westy, is a Scottish breed of dog with a distinctive white coat. This, too, is the origin of the West Highland White Terrier, which is thought to have originally been part of the Cairn breed. These include the Dandie Dinmont, Scottish Terrier, Skye Terrier and Cairn Terriers. The early vermin-catching dogs indigenous to Scotland, collectively known as the “Terriers of Scotland,” developed from common root stock and eventually separated into defined breeds. ![]() It enjoys a daily romp in a safe area or a walk on lead, as well as playtime at home. It is not friendly, however, toward small animals. It is affectionate and demanding, one of the friendliest terriers. The busy Westie is happy, curious and always in the thick of things. The tail needed to be sufficiently long to provide a handhold by which the dog could be pulled from shallow holes. The harsh double coat, especially the hard, straight outer coat, provided protection from the fox's teeth, especially around the head, as well as from the elements. It had to have formidable teeth and jaws in order to face a fox in closed quarters. Short legs aided in maneuverability in the cramped passages. These passages were often so narrow that the dog could not turn around. It must be small enough to fit between rocks in a narrow passageway that was the typical fox den in its area of origin. The West Highland White Terrier is compact and short-coupled. ![]()
